Guidelines for Maintenance and Custodial Personnel |
During your day-to-day
duties, you will encounter asbestos-containing materials
in IUPUI buildings.
The presence of asbestos in a building does not mean
that the health of building occupants is at risk.
As long as asbestos-containing materials remain in
good condition and are not disturbed or damaged, exposure
is unlikely. To avoid asbestos exposure and to protect
your health and the health of other building occupants,
follow the guidelines listed below.
- Always assume that a suspect material contains
asbestos.
- If you encounter any material that you suspect
may contain asbestos, notify your supervisor.
- Do not disturb, damage, or otherwise handle
asbestos-containing materials at any time. Building
materials should not be disturbed without previously
consulting the EHS Asbestos Department, which
can determine its asbestos content.
- Report any hazardous conditions (damaged asbestos
containing materials) to your supervisor immediately.
- To ensure environmentally safe working conditions,
all maintenance and custodial personnel should
attend Asbestos Awareness Training.
