Laboratory
Safety Coordinator’s Responsibilities (Link
to doc file)
In
order to provide an effective laboratory safety program,
there are activities that need to be completed by each department
in conjunction with the Department of Environmental Health
and Safety (EHS). Departmental Laboratory Safety Coordinators
(LSCs) were chosen by each department to insure that the
activities were completed. It is important to recognize
that in most departments, the LSC does not conduct all of
the activities personally but works through department management
to see that they are accomplished. Following are the basic
responsibilities of the LSCs:
1) |
Insure
that all new employees (technicians, grad students,
post-docs, professors, part-time students, and anyone
who receives compensation from the University) attend
appropriate New Employee Safety Orientation. |
| |
|
2) |
Provide
safety information to all departmental lab users when
EHS furnishes it to LSCs. Provide initial training to
lab users for new OSHA regulations using train-the-trainer
(i.e., PPE) or annual updates as required (i.e., Bloodborne
Pathogens). |
| |
|
3) |
Complete
initial chemical inventories and provide updates when
requested by EHS. |
| |
|
4) |
Update
EHS when there are changes in professional staff (chairman,
director, professor, post-doc, etc.) or changes in mailing
addresses of existing staff so that correspondence,
such as the Lab Notes newsletter, is sent to appropriate
people. |
| |
|
5) |
Point
out safety issues to lab users. This can be done informally,
as you observe them, or formally, using a checklist. |
| |
|
6) |
Review
and distribute Laboratory Safety Survey memos to people
responsible for making changes in the lab. Insure that
"required" improvements are made. |
