Removal and Disposal of Environmentally-Hazardous Materials

The following environmentally-hazardous materials have been identified as part of this project:

Asbestos-Containing Materials. An Asbestos Building Survey must be reviewed prior to commencing work in the area. The Survey is available by contacting IUPUI Environmental Health & Safety by calling 274-8152.
Lead-Containing Materials including but not limited to:
       Lead-shielding on high voltage cables
   Lead-shielded dry wall in areas utilizing x-ray devices or other radioactive sources
   Lead-based plumbing fixtures (cup sinks, drain lines) in clinical, educational and
       research laboratories
   Lead-based paint in buildings constructed prior to 1979
  Mercury-Containing Materials including but not limited to:
       Florescent light bulbs
   Temperature and pressure control devices (thermostats and thermocouplers)
   Drain lines and plumbing traps that have collected mercury
  Painting Operations (Degreasing, Surface Preparation, Stripping and Surface Finishing Operations) including but not limited to:
       Left over, off-spec latex, urethane and oil-based paints, sealers or finishes
   Solvents (xylene, toluene, acetone, mineral spirits, lacquer thinner, turpentine, etc.
   Chemical-based strippers
   Surface degreasers
   Surface deglossers
  Polychlorinated Biphenyl (PCB)-Containing Materials including but not limited to:
       Pre-1979 fluorescent lamp ballasts (Any ballast not labeled as being PCB-free is
       to be disposed of as a PCB ballast).
   Pre-1979 electrical transformers and capacitors
  Refrigerant-Containing (Freon) Devices
  Special Wastes including but not limited to:
       Water treatment and filtration media
   Sludges

STOCK CHEMICALS

It is the responsibility of IUPUI to ensure that stock chemicals and chemical-based materials are removed prior to the commencement of renovation or construction activities. In the event these types of materials are discovered, they are to be left in their original location. The IUPUI Department of Environmental Health and Safety is to be notified immediately at 274-4351 of their discovery. Staff from the IUPUI Department of Environmental Health and Safety will assume responsibility of assuring that all stock chemicals are promptly removed from the construction site.


CONTRACTOR’S RESPONSIBILITIES

The Contractor has the responsibility of informing its employees of the known or potential existence of environmentally-hazardous materials at IUPUI construction sites.

The Contractor has the responsibility of notifying the University by calling 274-4351 of the discovery or suspected discovery of environmentally-hazardous materials at any IUPUI construction or renovation site whether the existence was known prior to the commencement of work.

Unless agreed upon by contract or other binding agreement, the Contractor will be responsible for:
• Acquiring all necessary permits and/or licenses required for the packaging, transportation or
   disposal of environmentally-hazardous materials.
• Completing all arrangements necessary for the packaging, transportation or disposal of
   environmentally-hazardous materials.
• All costs incurred in the permitting, licensing, packaging, transportation or disposal of
   environmentally-hazardous materials.

The IUPUI Department of Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) retains the right to review all transportation and disposal facilities that are proposed to be utilized for the disposal of environmentally-hazardous materials generated at IUPUI. EHS retains the right to approve or deny all interim and/or final disposal sites proposed to be used in conjunction with the project. Contact EHS at 274-4351 at least 30 days prior to the commencement of the project.

The Contractor has the responsibility of providing the IUPUI Department of Environmental Health and Safety with complete documentation of the proper disposal of environmentally-hazardous materials originating at IUPUI. Such documentation may include but is not limited to:
• Copies of all manifests or chain of custody records.
• Copies of bill of ladings.
• Copies of appropriate disposal receipts.
• Copies of any certificates of disposal or destruction.


TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE

Technical assistance for the handling and/or disposal of environmentally-hazardous materials is available by the IUPUI Department of Environmental Health and Safety by calling (317) 274-4351.
