On November 2, 1989, the Environmental Safety Committee approved the formation of the Laboratory Safety Subcommittee to address issues directly related to laboratories. It’s main purpose is to develop policies and procedures dealing with laboratory safety. Issues of concerns include, but are not limited to the following: safety training, storage and disposal of hazardous and/or infectious materials; compressed gas storage and handling; electrical safety; emergency procedures; fire prevention and control; fume hood use; personal protective equipment; laboratory safety devices; and safety manuals. The committee will devise mechanisms to monitor and advise departments as to compliance with policies and regulations.

Membership on this subcommittee is composed of representatives from schools and other campus subdivisions that contain laboratories with chemical, biological or physical hazards.
