Current federal and international regulations require anyone directly involved with the shipment of potentially infectious materials and other regulated biological materials (including biological specimens and cultures) be properly trained on pertinent shipping requirements.
The IUPUI Office of Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) now offers a one and one-half (1.5) hour classroom training session on the regulatory requirements of shipping infectious and biological materials by ground or by air. Participants are shown how to properly classify their materials as well as the proper packaging, labeling and the support documentation required with each shipment.
Proper documentation of training is required to be maintained on-file. Participants are provided a certificate of training following completion of the training session. The certificate must be maintained on-site and made available to state or federal inspectors upon request. (EHS also maintains the names and dates of training of participants in a departmental database which can be made available should a participant lose their original certificate of training).
Refresher training is required every two years; again with documentation of training. The classroom training module will be made available in the near future for those in need of refresher training.
