Label chemical waste container
with a waste chemical label available through EHS.
Containers are to be labeled at the time it is determined
the material is waste. Chemicals in their original
containers with intact labels do not need to be
relabeled. Containers used to accumulate chemical
wastes are to be labeled at the time accumulation
begins. Provide all information requested on the
label. Be as specific as possible in identifying
the chemical composition of the waste material,
using as few abbreviations as possible. Provide
percentages of known chemicals in a mixture. Small
bottles, less than 250 ml, may be labeled by any
suitable means, which completely identifies the
contents of the bottle.
All
waste chemical containers are to be labeled at all
times. Below is an example of the
chemical waste label provided by Environmental Health
and Safety. If you would like self-adhesive waste
labels sent to your lab, please contact EHS at 274-4351
or via email at Kevin
Mouser or Amanda
Stinnett. Click here

After your waste bottle is ready to be picked up
by Environmental Health and Safety, complete a Hazardous
Materials Manifest for Intradepartmental Transportation.
The hazardous materials manifest shown in Figure
2 must be filled out accurately and completely.
Completed hardcopy hazardous materials manifest
forms must be returned to Environmental Health and
Safety at: IUPUI
ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH AND SAFETY, 620 UNION DRIVE,
UNION BUILDING, ROOM 043
Personnel from Environmental Health and Safety will
then schedule a pickup of your waste. EHS strives
to provide pick up service within three to five
working days after receipt of the manifest.
Place containers in a box. Keep materials grouped
according to the manifest. Place only a single layer
of chemicals in each box. Containers of incompatible
chemicals must be kept in separate boxes to avoid
adverse reactions. If multiple boxes are used, sequentially
number the boxes. Mark the corresponding manifest
with the appropriate number.
EHS requires at least a 30-day notification of any
pending large-scale (over 50 containers) laboratory
or stock chemical storage area clean-out. In order
to provide equitable service to all departments,
EHS may charge responsible departments for expenses
incurred as a result of large clean-outs conducted
without adequate notice.
