ENVIRONMENTAL
SAFETY POLICY
Subject:
Transportation of Hazardous Materials
Effective Date: February 1, 1997
Approved: Robert Martin, Vice Chancellor
Policy:
6
PURPOSE AND BACKGROUND:
Hazardous
materials are widely used throughout the University.
This use necessitates transportation of the material
from one point to another. During this transportation
process, the container is more vulnerable to breakage
and spillage of material may result. When spilled,
the hazardous materials often create unsafe conditions
and interrupt normal activities and traffic. In
order to reduce the chances of breakage during
transportation, certain requirements should be
established to govern transportation of hazardous
materials.
SCOPE:
This
policy applies to all staff, faculty, students
and guests of the University Community.
POLICY:
This
policy applies to all materials regulated by the
Federal Department of Transportation (DOT) except
for radioactive materials that are not hazardous
for any other reason. Requirements regarding the
transportation of hazardous materials in laboratory
areas shall be established by the Laboratory Safety
Committee. Hazardous materials transported in
all other areas of the University shall be packaged
in a DOT approved container or other container
approved by the Department of Environmental Health
and Safety. All containers shall have tight fitting
lids or caps.
PROCEDURE:
The
Department of Environmental Health and Safety
will be responsible for including information
regarding this policy in training programs, manuals
and other appropriate material, so that all affected
parties are informed of this policy. Willful violation
of this policy will subject the violator to appropriate
disciplinary action.
