| IUPUI EHS strives to
see that all aspects of its operations are performed
in a safe and healthy work environment. It is the policy
of IUPUI to provide a work environment that is free
from recognized hazards in accordance with the General
Duty clause of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration
(OSHA) Act (Public Law 91-596, Section 5(a)(l)). Each
supervisor is held accountable for the health and safety
of his/her employees. The EHS staff is available to
assist all supervisors in maintaining a safe work environment
and assuring compliance with all federal, state, and
local regulations. The EHS
website is continuously updated and should be used
as a resource for all EHS information. Some key roles
of a supervisor are as follows:
- Employee Health and Safety Handbook – Every
supervisor must be familiar with all requirements
outlined in this handbook;
- Communication – Supervisors shall communicate
all EHS policies with staff;
- Training – Ensure that all employees have
received the proper training prior to beginning
new tasks;
- Injury/Illness Prevention – The supervisor
is ultimately responsible to implement this plan
within their work area. Each supervisor shall provide
a safe and healthy environment for those areas and
personnel for whom they have supervisory or administrative
responsibility. Each supervisor must also be continuously
cognizant of the safety and health needs of all
co-workers and employees for whom they are responsible.
This shall include conducting area environmental
health and safety inspections, injury/illness reporting,
accident investigations, and recordkeeping. The
supervisor must report any injury and illness to
IUPUI Health Services as soon as possible;
- Safety Compliance – The supervisor is responsible
for safety compliance within the work area;
- Controls – Each supervisor is responsible
for ensuring that the necessary engineering and
administrative controls, personal protective equipment,
occupational medical examinations, and local exhaust
ventilation are in place and adequate for operations;
- Personal Protective Equipment – It is the
responsibility of each supervisor to ensure that
each employee has been trained in the use and maintenance
of PPE. Each supervisor must ensure that the proper
PPE is available to each employee;
- Employee Complaints – If an employee has
an EHS concern, it must be addressed immediately.
Contact EHS for immediate assistance with any concern;
- Regulatory Agency Contact – Immediately
notify EHS regarding any contact with the state
and federal agencies such as OSHA, EPA, IDEM. Also,
immediately notify EHS when you become aware of
a violation of any university, state, or federal
environmental health or occupational safety rule
or regulation.
