Section 5 of the American National Standard (ANSI)
Z136.1 states that “Laser safety training program(s) shall
be provided to the users of Class 3b or Class 4 lasers and laser
systems.” and “Users shall include operators, technicians,
engineers, maintenance and service personnel, and any other
personnel, working with or around lasers.”
This webpage contains both a training module and an exam portion
for all laser users on campus. Laser users are defined as personnel
that could be exposed to laser radiation above the Maximum Permissible
Exposure (MPE) level.
The ANSI definition of MPE is “The level of laser radiation
to which a person may be exposed without hazardous effect or
adverse biological changes in the eye or skin.”
If you are a class 3b or class 4 laser user on campus you must
first register using the registration link above. Once you have
registered you must log into the IUPUI Online Laser Safety Training.
This training module was developed by the Department of Environmental
Health and Safety to provide you with basic laser safety principles
and practices. This module will require about 30 minutes to
complete. You can also print off a handout for note taking that
includes copies of all slides used in the presentation using
the Training Notes link above.
Once you have completed the IUPUI Online Laser Safety Training
module you are required to take the Laser Safety Training
Exam. All users are required to take and pass this exam before
beginning work with lasers. Please log into the the Exam Login
above to take this exam.
After your exam has been submitted,
you will receive a certification in the mail if you passed.
If you do not pass the exam we will contact you to set up
a personalized training session.
