On December 6, 1991, The Occupational Safety and health Administration (OSHA) promulgated a final rule entitled "Occupational Exposure to Bloodborne Pathogens". The purpose of this standard is to eliminate or minimize occupational exposure to the Hepatitis B virus (HBV), Human Immunodeficiency virus (HIV), Hepatitis C virus (HCV), and other bloodborne pathogens. The revised Bloodborne Pathogens and Needlestick Prevention Standard requirements became effective April 18, 2001.

This annual retraining program was developed by the Department of Environmental Health and Safety to provide you with a review of exposure control principles and practices as they relate to bloodborne pathogens. This online course is intended to be an annual refresher for those employees who have already attended the Bloodborne Pathogen Training session. If you are a new employee, or have not attended a BBP training session, please click here for the current schedule.

The annual retraining is mandatory for all IUPUI employees who could be “reasonably anticipated” to face contact with blood and other potentially infectious materials as the result of performing their job duties, and are covered under the OSHA Bloodborne Pathogen Standard (29 CFR 1910.1030). The following is a partial list of who must be trained annually:

Physicians, Nurses and Emergency Room Personnel

Orderlies, Housekeeping Personnel, and Laundry Workers

Principal Investigators and Research Personnel

Laboratory and Blood Bank Technologists and Technicians

Dentists and other Dental Workers

Law Enforcement Personnel and Firefighters

Paramedics and Emergency Medical Technicians

Medical Waste Treatment Employees

The completion of this training and registration fulfills your annual retraining requirements for bloodborne pathogens! We will revise this training as needed in order to provide you with the most current information available.

How does it work?

The online training is currently structured into 3 sections. The training proceeds by reading the information and moving from one page to another. Occasionally, you will be required to answer some questions as they relate to the information provided. Upon completion of all three sections, your compliance with annual retraining requirements will be updated in our database.
